E85 Rally Car

World's First Ethanol Powered Rally Car

2003: After years spent amassing a great deal of experience with ethanol fuel and it's use in Otto cycle engines, BSR develops the first ethanol powered rally car in the world.

The goal was just to build a competitive rally car according to the Group A regulations. BSR and Robin Sandberg amaze everyone by winning the Super cup 2005 with a 2WD Saab 9-3, powered by the environmentally friendly fuel E85. The engine is a standard Saab engine with its complex Trionic 7 control system. The standard engine achieves 205Hp, but with BSR’s race tuning kit the engine achieves over 300Hp despite that the regulations demand a 34mm restricter. BSR's technicians also developed a unique response system that made the engine react extremely quick to inputs from of accelerator pedal.
Due to BSR’s and Robin Sandberg’s run of victories, the Swedish Car Sport Association considered reducing the engine's power by altering the regulations. This vehicle has now reached iconic status on the rally circuit, where today almost the entire Swedish rally elite use E85 powered vehicles.
